The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Chennai has bagged the first spot in the national ranking of higher institutes by the HRD Ministry.

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Chennai has bagged the first spot in the national ranking of higher institutes by the Human Resources and Development (HRD) Ministry. As per reports, as many as seven IITs of the country managed to secure top spots in HRD Ministry’s overall national ranking of higher education. Indian Institute of Science - Bangalore, which managed to bag top spot last year, has been pushed down to second spot this year, while IIT-Delhi has climbed one spot to third this year. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has been ranked in seventh in the overall ranking.

The report also stated that the All India Institute of Medical Sciences has been ranked first among medical sciences institutes. National Law School – Bangalore has topped among law colleges in the ranking. Delhi University's Miranda House has ranked first among colleges, while St Stephen has been ranked fourth.


The HRD Ministry, earlier in the day, conducted the official ceremony of National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Rankings and Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) rankings. Last year, Indian Institute of Science – Bangalore was at first position followed by Indian Institute of Technology or IIT Madras, IIT Bombay at the second and third position.

President Ram Nath Kovind will soon announce the list of winners and distribute the trophies to the achievers. NIRF rankings are based on various parameters including Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RPC), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI), and Perception.

The Official announcement of the NIRF Rankings 2019 will be made by the HRD ministry later in the day. The event took place at the Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital. MHRD would be releasing rankings in 9 categories which would include an overall category and individual categories of Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Law and Architecture.
